An equatorial sundial
Case: silver and gilt brass, octagonal plate. The geographic latitude of the observation point is set to the quarter-circle on the side. In connection with the magnetic compass the instrument is aligned to the north-south direction. The sun hand projects the position of the sun on the dial engraved with Arabic numbers. One is getting the true local time. On the backside of the ground-plate are engraved the geographical declinations from several European towns.
Johann Georg Vogler (1720-1764)
Vogler created this exquisite sundial in a time of change that marked the transition from the highly sophisticated pieces made by Willebrand or Martin to the later, simpler examples made by the compass makers in Augsburg. Even his brother Andreas Vogler (1730-1800) was not able to produce sundials of such supreme quality.
