Signed Breguet, Case No. 3522, 49 mm, 67 g, circa 1840
An important, almost as new gold enamel pocket watch for the Ottoman market with political map of the Aegean on the back, with signature of the famous enameller "Chenevard" Case: gold enamel, back with elaborate and detailed polychrome enameling: map of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea with names in calligraphic writing. Turquoise coloured bezel with polychrome floral ornamentation, turquoise coloured pendant, lug with gold champlevé decoration. Signed and numbered gold dome with floral engraving. Dial: enamel, secret signature, radial Ottoman numerals, auxiliary seconds, blued spade hands. Movm.: bridge movement, keywind, frosted, gilt, cylinder escapement, three-arm brass balance.
So far we only know of 35 of these exquisite enamel watches (by various makers) that are painted with maps.
The colour schemes of European enamel watches are very different to those of the watches that show the Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean with Greece and Turkey. Most of these pieces were created in Switzerland and intended as presents for Ottoman rulers; they bear Turkish characters and numerals and their lively colours represent a very different kind of enamel decoration. Some of the watches we know to have been created for the Oriental market are signed by Abraham Louis Breguet.
This watch is illustrated and described in: Klassik Uhren, 2/2013, "Landkarten auf Taschenuhr-Gehäusen" ("Maps on pocket watch cases") by Christian Pfeiffer-Belli, p. 27.
