Breguet "Diver", No. 1622, Cal. 1581 AS, 36 mm, circa 1962
A diver's important, extremely rare automatic wristwatch with date - a dive watch previously unknown that was produced in 1962. It is known as the Breguet No. 1622, and apparently, only 60 pieces were ever produced - with Breguet certificate No. 4411
Case: steel, screw back, rotating index bezel, Breguet deployant clasp. Dial: black, large luminous indexes, centre seconds, signed, date window, luminous Mercedes hands. Movm.: rotorwind movement, ground, rhodium-plated, Glucydur screw balance, incabloc shock protection for balance.
The watch at hand gives the impression of being older than it actually is; it is, however, not out of style for 1962. It has beautiful large and luminescent hour markers and the rotating diver’s bezel is made from Bakelite. The graceful bezel indicators are also luminous. The watch has a very fine case, which is unusual for a diver’s watch.
We do not know any details about the water resistance of the case, however, the Breguet 1622 has a screw-down caseback, which indicates that it has a water resistance of at least 100 metres. This would have been the standard at the time when the watch was produced. The somewhat austere dial only bears the Breguet brand logo and shows the date in a window. No other markings are visible on the case.
The Breguet 1622 diver’s watch is fitted with an automatic movement by the A. Schild watch company (AS). We can assume that Breguet created the 1622 watch to order for a commercial or private purpose; it is unlikely to have been intended for the commercial market. The Breguet records list the first buyer of the no. 1622 buyer (Monsieur X) as well as the relatively high price of 550 Francs paid for the watch in 1962. The Breguet No. 1622 is an uncommonly rare diver’s watch that is coveted by all collectors of vintage sports watches.
