A fine, heavy deck chronometer with 34 minute carousel according to Bahne Bonniksen and Class A Kew Certificate of "National Physical Laboratory, Kew Oberservatory, Richmond Surrey" marked "Especially Good"

Case: 18K gold, polished, engraved monogram, gold dome with dedication engraving: "Presented to Sir Bosdin Leech as a token of esteem and affection by the members of the Manchester Waterworks Committee, he having acted as chairman and deputy chairman for 25 years and on his 75th birthday. Nov. 13th, 1911", case maker's punch mark "I.J.T.N." (J. Newsome & Co.), pusher for seconds stop at "5". Dial: enamel, radial Roman hours, centre seconds, signed: "Kew Certificate Watch, Class A", gold spade hands. Movm.: 3/4 plate movement, decorated, gilt, screwed chatons, English lever escapement, gold screw compensation balance, blued balance spring with terminal curve, chatoned diamond endstone on balance.

"Carousel" watches are a design by the Danish watchmaker Bahne Bonniksen. He apprenticed with N.P. Thorsmark in Appenrade/Schleswig; after two years in Copenhagen he went to London to study under T.D. Wright at the British Horological Institute. After further studies and a number of awards he was made horological instructor at the Coventry Technical Institute; this was where he invented the carousel watch for which he applied for patent no. 21421 on November 24, 1892. His intention was to create a compromise between the "expensive" tourbillon and a normal chronometer - and he actually achieved better results with his carousel than some of the tourbillons. The escapement in a carousel with centre seconds turns around itself in 34 minutes, carousels with auxiliary seconds in 52,5 minutes, and thus avoids the variation caused by gravity.
