Du Bois-Calame, La Chaux-de-Fonds

, Case No. 18803 / 44107, 52 mm, 145 g, circa 1870

A remarkable hunting case pocket chronometer with one minute tourbillon - with lavish gold watch chain

Case: 18k gold, engine-turned, case maker's punch mark "HAR", glazed movement. Ziffbl.: silver, engine-turned, applied, floral gold decoration, radial Roman hours, auxiliary seconds, blued spade hands. Movm.: bridge movement, German silver, stripe-decorated, anti-galop system, very fine polished tourbillon steel cage - second type of Guinand's steel carriage, filigree mirror polished steel cock, pink gold train, wolfteeth winding wheels, pivoted detent chronometer escapement, gold screw compensation balance.

Ernest Guinand (died in 1879) of Le Locle was a gifted tourbillon maker like his peer Auguste Grether (1817-1879) of Ponts-de-Martel. Both men worked for a number of firms in Le Locle and La Chaux de Fonds. Guinand probably produced his first tourbillon around 1865; his very first one - no. 1060 - was later sold to Girard Perregaux and he is said to have sold as many as 25 tourbillons to this company.
