Gérard à Liège, 650 mm, circa 1845
A classicistic table regulator of fine qualitiy with jumping seconds, special form pin wheel escapement and half hour / hour strike - case attributed to Jean-Joseph Chapuis
Case: veneered with ebony, brass inlays, glazed on all sides, cuboidshaped base, four square columns, rising stepped top. Dial: enamel, radial Roman hours, centre seconds, signed, blued Breguet hands. Movm.: solid round pendulum movement, solid moulded movement pillars, special form pin wheel escapement with turnable click and fine adjusting device, 2 barrels for going and striking train, locking plate, 1 hammer/1 bell, compensation grid-iron pendulum with knife edge suspension.
Auguste Gérard (or Antoine-Joseph Gérard) was born in Namur in 1813; he began his apprenticeship in Namur in 1830 and continued it from 1832 on with the maker Mathieu Cleinge in Liège. He trained with Ratel in Paris from 1835 to 1837 and eventually established himself at Place Saint-Lambert in Liège. He died there on October 9, 1891.
