A gentleman's very important and intricate Geneva wristwatch in practically new condition with chronograph, 30 min. counter, indications of day, date and month, moon phase and auxiliary seconds - sold on February 15th, 1984 to Chronometrie Beyer in Zurich - with original mahogany box and original certificate with Beyer's stock number 235788 handwritten in green ballpoint pen
Case: 18k gold, push back, concave bezel, fluted lugs, 18k Patek Philippe gold buckle. Dial: silver, applied gold baton indexes, auxiliary seconds at "9", 30 min. counter, window for day and month, moon phase, chapter ring for date, cobalt blue enamelled moon phase disc with inlaid golden moon and stars, gold dauphine hands. Movm.: bridge movement, rhodium-plated, "fausses côtes" decoration, 8 adj., 23 jewels, very finely ground and bevelled chronograph steel parts, ratchet wheel, Geneva quality hallmark, Glucydur screw balance, shock protection for balance, index spring fine adjusting device.
This is an extremely unusual and highly sought-after chronograph in excellent condition – it is a rare occasion when this type of model with its special dial inscription (and with accessories) comes to auction. This is the first time that this watch is presented at an auction. Only 349 examples of the reference were produced in 35 years of manufacturing.
This reference 2499/100 is one of the fourth series produced by Patek Philippe in the early 1980s. It has since gained extreme cult status as one of the world’s most sought-after collector’s pieces. Only a very small number of watches were produced; from what we know there were around 9 examples per year. Most of them had yellow gold cases and only a few had the retailer’s signature on the dial. Since its launch in the early 1950s, reference 2499 has turned into one of the most desirable models. It originally replaced the first reference 1518 chronograph with perpetual calendar that was produced in series.
The models of the first of the four series were built between 1951 and 1960 and had rectangular chronograph pushers, applied Arabic numerals and leaf hands. The second series also had rectangular pushers, but applied indexes with an Arabic "12" and dauphine hands. The third series (1960 until 1978) was fitted with round pushers, leaf or dauphine hands and applied indexes. The watches of the fourth series like this one were produced from 1978 until about 1985, with round pushers, dauphine hands and baton indexes; they were later replaced by reference 3970.
