Lot No. 176* (93rd Auction)
Rémond, Lamy, Mercier & Co. à Genève, 94 x 65 x 14 mm, 152 g, circa 1810

An extremely rare, very fine gold enamel snuff box "Telemachus and Calypso"
Case: gold, maker's punch mark "IGRC" in a lozenge (Rémond, Lamy, Mercier & Co. à Genève).
Rectangular case with chamfered corners, lid with rectangular polychrome enamel medallion: Telemachus in the company of his mentor, telling the nymph Calypso about his adventures. Sides and base with geometric and corn ear pattern engine-turning, translucent cobalt blue and opaque black enamelling. Lid, base and corners with floral engraving on sablé ground.

The miniature was created after an engraving by Jean-Baptiste Tillard and drawings by Charles Monnet, who published his illustrations for Fénelon‘s "Histoire de Télemaque" in 1773.

In 1811, Jean George Rémond, Jean Noël Lamy, Laurent Guisseling, Pierre Mercier and Daniel Berton formed a company known as Rémond, Lamy, Mercier & Co.

A similar example is illustrated and described in: "Enamels of the World 1700-2000, The Khalili Collections" by Haydn Williams, 2009, p. 301.
