Lot No. 67 (93rd Auction)
Matthäus Christian von Hilten, Frankfurt, 50 mm, 106 g, circa 1760

A rare German pair-cased verge pocket watch with a polychrome enamelled double portrait of a distinguished gentleman
Case: silver, case maker punch mark "FB". Dial: enamel. Movm.: full plate movement, keywind, chain/fusee, three-arm steel balance.

This unusual pocket watch shows the portrait of a distinguished gentleman in a blue garment and powdered wig twice – once on the outer case and again on the balance bridge of the movement. Who knows – it could be a portrait of the watchmaker himself. Matthäus Christian von Hilten was a watchmaker in Frankfurt who became a master in 1729. He died in 1770.
