The listed housing complex "Riehmers Hofgarten" in Berlin was built between 1880 and 1899 after the designs of Wilhelm Riehmer and Otto Mrosk. Attempting to be as different as possible to the usual dark and cramped tenements with tiny courtyards, the architects created a complex across three streets, which included 18 houses and a courtyard garden. Large apartments look out on the street from behind the grand neoclassic fronts; magnificent gateways lead to the courtyard, which the smaller apartments look out on. Even though parts of the area were destroyed during the war, Riehmers Hofgarten still counts as one of the 100 most important architectural sites in Berlin.
Since the watch is inscribed with the monograms "WR" as well as "OM" and the dedication to Wilhelm Riehmer on the cuvette includes the years 1879 to 1899 - which is almost exactly the period of time in which the housing complex was built - there is little doubt that this handsome pocket watch was given to the architect Wilhelm Riehmer by his partner Otto Mrosk.
