Piguet & Meylan à Brassus, Case No. 1995, 59 mm, 130 g, circa 1820
A remarkable, large quarter repeating pocket watch with musical movement that activates on the hour or at will
Case: 18k gold, engine-turned, case maker's punch mark "IR" and "PM" (Piguet & Meylan). Dial: gilt and silvered, engine-turned, blued Breguet hands. Movm.: bridge movement, keywind, 2 hammers / 2 gongs, 2 barrels, pinned-disc musical mechanism (sur plateau) with vibrating blades, mirror-polished levers for musical movement, cylinder escapement, three-arm gold ring balance.
The front bezel conceals a lever at 8 o'clock to activate/deactivate playing music on the hour (or at will). A tiny slider at 6 o’clock releases the musical movement.
Philippe Samuel Meylan met Isaac Daniel Piguet and formed the partnership with him; they worked in Geneva under the name "Piguet & Meylan" from 1811 to 1828. The company became famous for its pocket watches with special functions; they created automatons with man and animal shapes and intricate musical mechanisms as well as skeleton watches.
