The steel case of the Omega Seamaster Automatic pilot’s range wrist chronograph is waterproof to a depth of 60 m and features covered lugs and a flat mineral lense. It is the predecessor of the Speedmaster Professional Mark III and has achieved its current cult status not only because of its appealing exterior: The watch is fitted with Omega’s legendary automatic calibre 1040, a modified Lemania calibre 1340 and remarkable for several reasons - it was launched in 1970 as the first automatic chronograph movement with 28,800 beats per hour and permitted the used of a central minute chronograph hand. In this model it is present in a light-blue version set underneath the light-blue central second counter, which features a stylised aircraft on the tip. The Seamaster Chronograph reference 176.002 was launched in 1971 and available until 1974. Among the lovers of vintage Omega watches, this chronograph is one of the most highly coveted models.
This model is illustrated and described in Marco Richon, "Omega", Bienne 2007, p. 551.
