Omega, Swiss, Ref. 5517, Cal. 42.9 8-D CLEF-390, 120 x 110 x 50 mm, circa 1950
An ornamental, manual wind Omega luxury pendulette, with rare, hand-made dial by Jean-Pierre Mathey: "The Naval Battle"
Case: brass, gilt, glazed front, 4 bun feet. Dial: black lacquer, monogrammed, gilt hands. Movm.: brass 8-day movement, gilt.
The China lacquer dial was hand-made by Jean-Pierre Mathey-Claudet, as shown by his monogram signature near the right lower edge. The dial shows two sailing vessels under fire, surrounded by a flock of sea gulls. The exquisitely made hands have the form of a trident.
This timepiece is one of a series of small luxury clocks created in cooperation with Jean-Pierre Mathey-Claudet in 1950.
Another clock from this series is illustrated and described on page 456 of Marco Richon’s "Omega", Biel 2007.
