Lot 301

Czapek & Cie. à Genève, Case No. 32078 / 14794, 43 mm, 55 g, circa 1840
A fancy Geneva pocket watch "The Boar Hunt"
Case: gold/silver, ornamented in high relief. Dial: enamel. Movm.: bridge movement, three-arm steel ring balance.
According to current news reports, the supply of boar meat provides an abundant organic and sustainable alternative to factory farming. Whoever wears this watch shows themselves to be not only well versed on the subject, but also appreciates the arts and crafts – the woodland scene of huntsmen and their hounds in a leafy forest has been executed most skillfully and in exquisite detail.
In 1839, long before the company Patek Philippe existed, François (originally Franciszek) Czapek, a native of Poland, founded the watch manufactory Patek, Czapek & Cie in Geneva together with Antoine de Patek. The cooperation ended some years later due to irreconcilable differences and from 1845 on Czapek produced high-quality timepieces for his aristocratic clientele under the name Czapek & Cie. In 1869 the company ceased trading for unknown reasons.
François Czapek wrote the first book on watchmaking in the Polish language.
