The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), whose headquarters are in Frederick, Maryland, USA, was established in 1939 and is represented in more than 68 countries; with 470,000 members, it is the largest civil pilots’ association worldwide. In 1952 AOPA initiated the launch of Breitling’s Navitimer models; Wakmann had entered a partnership with Breitling as early as 1947. The Wakmann Watch Co. was founded in 1946 by Icko Wakmann in New York and imported several high-quality watch brands for the North American market.
The hand-wound chronographs with date, day of the week and month indication proved to be very popular and are even now highly sought-after by the collectors because of their attractive design and the superb movements they were fitted with.
