The painting is based on an etching in the book "Het Menselyk Bedryf" (book of trades) by the artist Jan Luyken (1649-1712) dating from 1694. It contains a collection of copperplate etchings illustrating in great detail the tasks and culture of craftsmen in Amsterdam in the so-called Golden Age in the late 17th century. Some of the illustrations such as the baker, the engraver or the apothecary have become world famous.
The original etching called the "Orlosimaaker" (clockmaker) is part of the collection of the Rijksmuseums in Amsterdam.
In the 19th century, commercial interest as well as a romanticized idea of medieval life led to a renewed interest in glass painting. The craft used style elements from historism and realism; it was a type of genre art which brought back 17th and 18th century Dutch and Belgian painting by portraying common activities of everyday life.
