A rare verge pocket watch "Oignon" with alarm
Case: silver, bezel with volutes and baroque strap work ornamentation, reverse side with open work decoration around the edge and four engraved cartouches with animals representing the four seasons, rear bell, large lateral hinge. Dial: enamel, radial Roman hours, central rotating alarm disc, blued steel hands. Movm.: fine full plate movement, applied, florally engraved and pierced silver ornaments, firegilt, signed, chain/fusee, florally engraved barrel for alarm train, Egyptian movement pillars, 1 hammer, three-arm steel balance, fine florally engraved, pierced balance bridge with mythological birds.
Estienne Baillon (1678-1748)
Estienne Baillon was born 1678 in Rouen, as son of Jean-Baptiste Baillon. He became a master clockmaker in 1691 and moved to Paris in 1704, where he married Marie-Thérèse Blin in 1708. In 1708 Baillon also established himself at the "Galeries du Louvre"; in 1713 he became a citizen of Paris. He was the educating master of Jaques Thuret.
