A remarkable, very rare ship's chronometer with 56h power reserve indicator and "Poole's" auxiliary compensation balance with additional compensation by Airy. The instrument served in the British Navy from 1881 to 1929
Case: mahogany box, brass inlays, applied ivory signature shield, inlaid handles, with lid and glass, case key, brass gimbals and bowl,broad arrow, engraving "H.S.1", three-body. Dial: silvered, signed, numbered, inlaid radial Roman numerals, large auxiliary seconds, blued spade hands. Movm.: brass movement, polished, decorated, moulded pillars, chain/fusee, spring detent escapement, blued screws, heavy auxiliary comp. balance with 2 weights and 6 screws according to Poole, helical balance spring, chatoned diamond endstone on balance.
