An impressive diamond-set gold enamel pocket watch made for the Ottoman market with with original silk-lined morocco case - made for Sultan Abdul Hamid II
Case: 18k gold, the front and back cover fully engine-turned and translucent red and blue-grey enamelled and decorated with a stylized flower-head, framed by a narrow opaque white enamelled border, the front cover costly decorated with cut diamonds; engraved band with geometrical pattern, gold dome with enamelled Ottoman characters and a laurel wreath. Dial: enamel, radial Ottoman numerals, auxiliary seconds, blued spade hands. Movm.: 4/5 plate movement, frosted, gilt, screwed gold chatons, side lever escapement, gold screw compensation balance.
Constantaras Frères were the jewellers of his Majesty the Sultan, active in Constantinople in the late 19th/early 20th century.
Abdul Hamid II
(22 September 1842 – 10 February 1918) was the 34th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the last Sultan to exert effective autocratic control over the fracturing state.
