Cartier à Paris, "Santos", Case No. 12610 / 6826, 25 x 34 mm, circa 1915
An early and elegant wristwatch
Case: platinum, yellow gold back with dedication engraving, screws on the band, crown set with sapphire cabochon, 18k white gold deployant clasp. Dial: silvered. Movm.: bridge movement, screw compensation balance.
Designed in 1904, the production of the Cartier Santos began in 1911.
Louis Cartier created the "Santos" model in 1904 for his friend, the famous pilot Alberto Santos-Dumont. It is particularly remarkable because this is the first wristwatch for gentlemen as well as the first aviator’s watch ever produced by Cartier.
A similar watch is illustrated and described in Osvaldo Patrizzi, "White Cartier", Antiquorum Editions 2006, No. 3.
The dedication engraving on the case back reads: "Nobody gives you power. You must take it. W. R. Wilkerson III."
William Richard "Billy" Wilkerson (September 29, 1890 - September 2, 1962) was the founder of The Hollywood Reporter, the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas and owner of such nightclubs as Ciro's in West Hollywood. He was also responsible for discovering actress Lana Turner across the street from Hollywood High School. In 1946 he began a series of columns in The Hollywood Reporter, listing suspected Communist sympathizers; "Billy's List" provided the foundation for what became the Hollywood blacklist.
