Lot 24

David Lestourgéon, London, Movement No. 1596, Case No. 1596, 58 mm, 155 g, circa 1696
A pair-cased verge pocket watch with silver champlevé dial and large opening to show the blued regulation disc; decorated with the supporters of the Royal arms: the crowned English lion and the Scottish unicorn
Case: outer case - silver. Inner case - silver. Dial: silver champlevé. Movm.: full plate movement, chain/fusee, three-arm steel balance.
This rare English watch is regulated by turning a gilt and blued steel disc set below "XII" on the silver champlevé dial.
Watchmaker David Lestourgéon (1660-1731) was born in Rouen and came to London in 1681 as a Hugenot refugee. He was a member of the Clockmakers' Company from 1698 to 1731. The style elements of the movement - such as the large peripheral balance bridge - show clearly that the maker of the watch was French.
