Claudius Du Chesne, Londini, Height 580 mm, circa 1700
An English "Queen Anne" quarter repeating "Carillon" bracket clock with hour self strike and date
Case: ebonized wood; rectangular body with cushion moulded and open-worked repoussé top over a gallery with sound-openings flanked by four gilt bud finials; applied ormolu mountings, ornamented handles to the sides, glass panels on four sides, bun feet with claws. Dial: bronze, applied silvered chapter ring with inlaid radial Roman hours, date aperture at "6", matted centre, winged cherub spandrels, lever "N/S" for strike/silent, aperture for mock pendulum, pierced blued steel hands. Movm.: rectangular shaped brass movement, engraved with foliate decor, 2 x steel band/fusee, verge escapement, 1 hammer / 1 bell for hour self strike, 5 hammers / 5 bells for quarter repeater, short pendulum.
The ebony veneered case has a very rare cushion-shaped gilt top with pierced ornaments. Front and back show two round medallions with the chased figure of St. George fighting the dragon. St. George was the protector of Richard the Lionheart and his descendants and by 1222 he was declared the patron saint of England. The top part is decorated with the goddess Minerva.
Claudius Du Chesne came to London from Paris around 1690 and was free of the Clockmakers' Company from 1693 to 1730; he was a well-respected maker who produced several complicated astronomical and musical clocks. Some of his pieces are today part of important collections such as the Green Vault in Dresden, Germany.
