Jaeger-LeCoultre, Swiss, "Shark/Vogue", Case No. 333354, Ref. E2643, Cal. Val. 725, 40 mm, circa 1968
A rare vintage wristwatch with chronograph, tachy scale and "Reverse Panda" dial
Case: steel, screw back, rotating bezel with 60 minutes division. Dial: black.
In the U.S., this vintage chronograph has always been called the "Shark", while in Europe it is known as "Vogue".
The "Shark/Vogue" reference E2643 is part of a limited range and was designed by Jaeger-LeCoultre in the late 1960s – it was their reaction to an increasingly demanding world of sports chronographs. Despite its prestigious name the E2643 only had limited commercial success, so that the production was discontinued after just a few years; the market was saturated by the brands Omega, Heuer and Rolex.
The 40 mm case is very similar to that of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s "4 ATM", the Autavia 2446 or the Rolex "Cosmograph Daytona" reference 6241 – not only because of the black tachy bezel but also because of the round chronograph pushers that are not screwed-down. The reverse panda dial with the silvered sub-dials is reminiscent of the "Cosmograph Daytona".
The watch is fitted with the manual Valjoux calibre 725, a robust movement that has more or less cult status.
The marvellous, bold proportions of the dial with its gentle patina, the clear-cut case and a beautiful 60-minute bezel make this version of a rare chronograph a truly unique piece that will no doubt make its new owner very happy!
