Johann Sommer Jenger Aug (Johann Sommer the Younger, Augsburg), 110 x 110 x 85 mm

A square cased, single-handed Augsburg table clock of high quality, with hour strike

Case: firegilt brass case, engraved, the sides with windows, four toupie feet, rear bell. Dial: brass, gilt, engraved with strawberry blossoms and a Tudor rose in the centre, applied silver chapter ring with inlaid radial Roman hours, single blued steel hand. Movm.: square brass movement, florally engraved and pierced appliques, chain/fusee, finely engraved barrel for hour strike, 1 engraved hammer, locking plate, verge escapement, two-arm iron balance with hog's bristle, engraved and pierced balance cock.

Watch- and casemaker Johann Sommer V was a 5th generation descendant of an Augsburg family that had produced fine metalworkers and makers of watches and clocks for centuries. He was born on June 2, 1608, married on February 4, 1634 and died sometime after 1666.
