A pair-cased verge coach watch with regulator dial and moon age for the Chinese market Case: outer case - gilt, florally engraved bezels, à goutte, large lateral hinge. Inner case - gilt, polished centre, engraved foliage and floral decoration to the band, signed movement protection cap. Dial: enamel, outer Arabic minutes, eccentric hour chapter ring with Roman numerals at "12", auxiliary seconds at "3", subsidiary chapter ring with Arabic numerals indicating ages of the moon at "9", heart-shaped gold hands. Movm.: full plate movement, keywind, firegilt, signed, screwed on florally engraved ornaments, chain/fusee, square baluster pillars, verge escapement, three-arm steel balance, very finely florally engraved and pierced balance cock with fantasy bird, chatoned diamond endstone on balance.
William Carpenter (1770-1805) William Carpenter produced fine watches and automata for the Oriental Market; he is most famous for his extravagant musical automata. A number of them are held by the Palace Museum of Peking in China.
