Lot 550

Barraud, Cornhill, London, Movement No. 2/998, 160 x 165 x 160 mm, circa 1840
A small ship's chronometer with 56h power reserve and additional compensation "correcting weight"
Case: mahogany, integrated keywinding. Dial: silvered. Movm.: brass movement, 74 mm, bimetallic chronometer balance with weights, screws and auxiliary compensation.
Dieu et mon droit (God and my right) is the motto of the British monarchs since Henry VI and is part of the royal coat of arms engraved on the magnificent ivory plate – a daring contrast to the unostentatious dial with its unusual aperture displaying the power reserve.
Cedric Jagger suggests that the confusing fractional numbers on the movements by Barraud (and later Barraud & Lund) identify chronometers built from older timekeepers that were repurchased and modernized. The number below the bar would then correspond to the original movement number.
