Cornelis Uyterweer, Rotterdam, Movement No. 265, 55 mm, 144 g, circa 1730
A Dutch pair-cased verge pocket watch of museum quality with date aperture, mock pendulum and outer "repoussé" case "King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba", made by French case maker Jeremias Cochin
Case: outer case - silver, signed "Cochin". Inner case - silver. Dial: silver, Champlevé, inlaid radial Roman hours, a chased putto scene with signature "Uyterweer" in the centre. Movm.: fine full plate movement, keywind, chain/fusee, ring blance.
The engraved silver balance bridge is particularly striking: it shows the personification of Africa with an engraved banner 'T Land Africa". A glazed kidney-shaped opening reveals the balance as a mock pendulum.
Cornelis Uyterweer (Rotterdam 1702-1782) was one of the most influential Dutch watchmakers of his time. He was a master craftsman and head of the guild in Rotterdam from 1749 until 1769.
His timepieces are famous for their unusual balance bridges, often with mock pendulum, and for finely wrought Repoussé cases such as this.
Today Cornelis Uyterweer‘s watches can be seen in many important museums like the Museum Rotterdam, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and in the Guildhall in London.
