Jeremiaß Pfaff, Augspurg, 190 x 170 x 110 mm, circa 1660
An impressive hexagonal horizontal table clock with quarter hour / hour strike "Grande Sonnerie" and unusual hour double strike of museum quality - with original leather box and original key
Case: firegilt brass case, moulded, the sides with screwed on windows, baluster-shaped feet, 3 rear bells. Dial: brass, firegilt, applied silvered chapter ring with radial Roman hours, centre engraved with a flower, corners with wild strawberry motifs. Movm.: hexagonal brass movement, firegilt, chain/fusee for going train, 3 fixed barrels for three striking trains, 3 hammers, the heads formed and engraved with fish, locking plate with internal teeth and control dial for strike, verge escapement, plain two arm iron balance with copper balance spring.
Jeremias Pfaff I was born around 1618 in Ausburg and came from a family of clockmarks. He died in 1677, the same year his son Jeremias II (who was born in 1651) became a master clockmaker in Augsburg.
Juergen Abeler notes that both father and son produced many clocks, including church clocks and numerous table clocks - one of those shows a figure of Atlas and is in the possession of the Württembergisches Landesmuseum in Stuttgart. An early clock by Pfaff - dated and signed 1643 - is part of the Gershom Parkington Memorial Collection in St. Edmundsbury in England.
