Jonathan Lowndes in Pallmall, 57 mm, 140 g, circa 1705
A fine pair-cased verge pocket watch
Case: outer case - silver, tiered, polished, case maker's punch mark "MN", large lateral hinge. Inner case - silver, polished, case maker's punch mark "MN". Dial: silver, Champlevé, inlaid radial Roman hours, chased and engraved centre with cartouches and signature, blued Poker & Beetle hands. Movm.: fine full plate movement, keywind, firegilt, applied florally engraved ornaments, signed, chain/fusee, Egyptian movement pillars, three-arm steel balance, florally engraved, pierced balance cock.
Jonathan Lowndes, "at the Dyal in Pall Mall, a famous and celebrated maker", was a member of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in London from 1680 until 1710, making him a contemporary of Tompion and Quare. Many of his clocks remain but we know of only a few pocket watches.
