Lot 203

Rolex "Perpetual Precision", Movement No. 10315 G4618, Ref. 8171, Cal. Hunter 10315, 38 mm, circa 1953
An extremely rare automatic Rolex "Padellone" with full calendar and moon phase
Case: 18k gold, push back ref 8171 and engraving 157 and crown, additional not original aftermarket Milanaise Gold bracelet. Dial: silvered, raised indexes, auxiliary seconds, window for weekday and months in English, outer red date indicator, moon phase, baton hands. Movm.: rotorwind movement, Glucydur screw balance.
Reference 8171 is known as Padellone among the collectors and its attractive proportions make it one of the most legendary and sought-after vintage models of Rolex. Rolex watches with full calendar and moon phase are extremely rare - in fact, Rolex has only ever produced two models which display the day of the week, the month, the date and the moon phases: reference 6062 in a 36 mm Oyster case, and reference 8171 with a remarkable 38 mm diameter. It is interesting to note that both models were only produced during a very short period in the early 1950s, in yellow gold, rose gold and stainless steel.
The distinguishing features of the silvered dial are the gold-coloured and bevelled hour indexes; they are surrounded by the date ring with red numerals 1 to 31. The date hand has an arrow-shaped blued tip, while hour and minute hand are both baton hands.
Only a few references 8171 have come on the market in the last few decades - whereas the number of avid collectors has multiplied enormously.
