A fine tabernacle clock dating from the late Renaissance period, with a single hand, hour strike and alarm - decorated with motifs from a series of copper engravings "The Planets" by a German artist "I. B." (active 1523-1530)
Case: copper, firegilt, engraved, 2 hammers / 1 bell. Dial: Front - applied silver hour chapter ring with Roman numerals "I-XII" and Arabic 24 hours as well as applied hour knobs for time reading by night, central alarm disc with Arabic numerals and centred compass rose, iron hand, winding arbor. Back - hour strike control dial with Arabic numerals, applied hour knobs for time reading by night, iron hand, winding arbor. Movm.: iron frame, iron going train, 2 x gut/fusee for going and striking train, verge escapement, iron rim foliot.
All sides are elaborately engraved: the front has a typical Mannerism-style wreath of fruit and ribbons, the back shows a true-to-detail falcon surrounded by tendrils of leaves. The engraving on the sides is of outstanding quality and is inspired by the etchings "Mars" and "Sol" from the series entitled "The Planets" dating from 1528; they were created by the German artist "I. B.", who was active from 1523 to 1530. The base plate features a hare, a deer, a dog and a horse, together with lavish foliate scrolls; the roof is similarly adorned. An urn sits on the bell tower, which is ornamented with fine ribbons.
