Lot 238

Southern German, 55 mm, 200 g, circa 1600
A large one handed late Renaissance pendant watch with hour self strike
Case: brass, firegilt, florally engraved and pierced, rear bell. Dial: gilt, florally engraved. Movm.: full plate movement, 2 barrels, 1 hammer, stackfreed, foliot and hog's bristle.
The watch is an excellent example of an early German watch with hour strike and stackfreed. The stackfreed mechanism consists of a cam and a spring arm and exerts a retarding force on the mainspring. The design was probably invented in the 16th century in Nuremberg and used mainly in the Southern regions of Germany. The stackfreed was much thinner than the chain/fusee construction and thus allowed the production of flatter watches.
