Press release of our 103rd auction on November 7, 2020

Whether you are looking for wristwatches, pocket watches, table or long case clocks or even horological literature – you will find them all in the catalogue of Dr. Crott Auctioneers. Along with the classics such as Rolex and Patek Philippe, the main focus of the auction is on timepieces made in Glashütte.

A short review of the 103rd auction in early November...
Press release of our 103rd auction on November 7, 2020
Punctually at 12 o'clock Stefan Muser kicked off his 103rd Dr. Crott auction; it is not only the second time the event takes place at Hotel Speicher7 in Mannheim but it is also the second auction since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The consequences of the stringent regulations are obvious at first glance. The number of participants in the room had to be reduced even further to provide the required distance between the seats. Plexiglass partitions and of course the compulsory wearing of masks ensure a safe environment in these difficult times.

418 lots were called at the event. The reduction in the number of lots compared to previous auctions is also down to Covid-19 due to the marked increase of online and telephone bidders, which necessitates extra time for each lot.

The 103rd auction is a striking success

The auction proved to be extremely successful. Highlights to be mentioned are of course the Patek Philippe Nautilus Jumbo, changing owners for 112,500 euros and the Datograph Flyback made by A.Lange & Söhne, which sold for 77,500 euros and therefore exceeded the estimate as much as the two Rolex GMT-Master II models that sold for 12,500 and 13,000 euros including surcharge.

The Glashütte Original Grande Cosmopolite Tourbillon achieved the proud sum of 110,000 euros, and 62,500 euros was the final price of the yellow gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo. It was fascinating to see that only a very small number of watches did not find a buyer during this auction; even those more unusual pieces that would normally be of interest only to a more eccentric clientele found new homes.

Auctioneer Stefan Muser commented on the current situation

After the auction I asked Stefan Muser if he was happy with the auction as such and he said that he was "indeed very happy with the day" – he also mentioned that he found conducting a successful auction under the current conditions easier than it would first appear.

In his opinion, in times such as these doubts and uncertainty with regard to the rising national debt and the stability of our currency on one side and the simple fact that many just have money available which they would otherwise spent on travelling or restaurants on the other, are just two of the reasons why people lay value on tangible assets.

Auction houses must adapt

The shifting of the auctions – from on-site participation to cyberspace – is a consequence of the Covid-19 crisis that is probably here to stay. Preview opportunities are less in demand and a detailed online presentation of the lots in the run-up to the auction is vital.

Stefan Muser was pleased by the fact that presenting such a large number of timepieces made in Glashütte – either by A. Lange & Söhne or by Glashütte Original – proved to be such a successful highlight of his event.

Success in a niche

And he certainly enjoyed the sale of the two Riefler precision pendulum clocks. Dr. Crott Auctioneers is one of the few houses in the market still meeting this niche demand - they do so regularly and with great success. He was also pleasantly surprised that all of the Hublot timepieces in the catalogue were in such great demand.

The few lots that did not find a new owner on the day can now be purchased in the after auction sale. The work on the new catalogue has already started of course and the 104th auction is planned for Saturday, May 22, 2021, 12 o'clock sharp at the Hotel Speicher7.
