Press release of our 104th auction on May 22, 2021

More than 460 individual lots were listed in the catalogue of Dr. Crott Auctioneers' 104th auction. While the main focus was as usual on the timepieces made by Patek Philippe and Rolex, there were plenty of other exciting highlights too.

A short review of the 104th auction in May …

Finally – auction day had arrived, for the 104th event held by Dr. Crott Auctioneers, which as always saw all kinds of beautiful and rare pieces being presented. However, there was one big difference to this Saturday, May 22nd, 2021. Instead of looking into the eyes of an excited live audience, the gathering auctioneers Stefan and Steffi Muser stood in front of during this afternoon consisted exclusively of their own team members. A rather strange experience for the two of them, who love the close personal contact with their clients.

Alas, the Covid-19 regulations issued by the Baden-Württemberg government stated that – for the first and hopefully last time – the auction was to take place without participants in the room. The number of telephone bidders was obviously higher than usual and called for a large team of telephone agents to look after them.

An exceptional-sized virtual crowd of online spectators and participants – approximately 300 bidders at any given time during the auction – was present, with several spikes at particularly exciting lots such as lot 219, a marvellous F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain Ruthenium, which went to a new home for 281,250 euros. Patek Philippe's Nautilus models attracted the bidders as expected; the „Jumbo" ref. 3700/001 full set (lot 126) sold for 118,750 euros, while its sister reference 3700/1 (lot 133) knocked down for 83,000 euros (prices include a surcharge of 25%).

While the yellow gold 3700/1 (lot 135) reached a sum of 137,500 euros, the new owner of the white gold 3711G (lot 134) had to settle for a proud 156,250 euros to take his treasure home.

An obvious highlight of the day was the 40 years of Nautilus anniversary chronograph ref. 5976/1G-001 (lot 136), which achieved an incredible 302,500 euros.

It was not only the Patek Philippe Nautilus which sparked an enthusiastic bidding war though – to mention but one, the gold Padellone listed as lot 127 was eventually knocked down at 181,250 euros.

Those who have been following the events and catalogues presented by Dr. Crott Auctioneers over the last few years will have noticed that the main focus of attention is slowly moving from clocks and pocket watches to those fine chronometers worn on the wrist. So it is a great pleasure for Stefan and Steffi Muser that their 104th auction was such a great success in that particular area.

There was lot 272, a magnificent Tudor Snowflake, which found a new owner for 12,500 euros – not surprising at all, as the watch is in excellent condition.

More fabulous results were obtained by lots 345 and 346, two Vacheron Constantin 222 models in 34 mm cases. While the gold version was knocked down at 42,500 euros, the lovers of the steel variant fought each other to a final price of 61,250 euros. The watches were originally estimated between 20,000 and 30,000 euros.

Predicted at 3,000 to 10,000 euros, the Universal Genève Aero-Compax dating from the 1940s was able to surpass that figure easily – lot 386 eventually sold for an amazing 25,000 euros. The Rolex Daytona ref. 6263 (lot 462) was a late entry to the event but managed to finish at 68,750 euros – a perfect ending to a very successful auction.

Auction 105 will take place in November and Stefan and Steffi Muser are very much looking forward to welcoming the usual crowd of lovers and collectors of fine timepiece personally. It is just so much more fun that way, they say with a smile …
