Presse Release, 102nd Auction at Dr. Crott Auctioneers

For the first time ever, Dr. Crott's auction took place at the new location on Mannheim's Rheinpromenade. Despite the dramatic constraints of the Covid-19 situation and the postponement to the end of June, the spring auction turned out a resounding success. Due to the legal restrictions (a minimum distance of 1.50 m), no more than 99 participants were allowed in the auction room at one time, which meant that the majority of prospective buyers took part remotely, either by telephone or online via the auctioneers' web site. To accommodate the unusual conditions and to allow more time, ensuring that no participants suffered any disadvantages due to time delays in the transmission, the auction of the approximately 550 lots lasted nearly an hour longer than usual.

Auctioneer Stefan Muser was delighted with the results of the 102nd auction and pointed to the sales figures, which came to approximately 90% of the estimates. He was particularly pleased with the large selection of Lange wristwatches with tourbillon (among them a Tourbograph Pour le Mérite which sold for 437,500 euro including surcharge), and the excellent result of a steel Lange 1 (275,000 euro incl. surcharge). The almost "mandatory" Patek Philippe Nautilus, in this case a gold "Jumbo" (ref. 3700/1) dating from the early 1980s, easily met expectations with a sales price of 125,000 Euro incl. surcharge – as did the rare gold Omega Constellation Grand Luxe Chronomètre with cloisonné dial dating from 1954 (77,900 euro).

Amongst the many complicated timepieces dating from the 2000s, only the Zenith Academy Christophe Colomb Equation of Time did well with a sales price of 93,800 euro. Other complicated young watches such as Hublot's Classic Fusion Tourbillon Cathedral Minute Repeater (2015), Patek Philippe's World Time Moon (2015) or the Grande Cosmopolite by Glashütte Original (2012) remained with their owners.

The extravagant Hotel Speicher7 proved to be the perfect location for the event; for the next auction on November 7, 2020 the main auction room auction will be even larger. Separating preview days from the auction itself (which this time took place on a Monday) was a success. This new concept will be adopted for the next event as well. It is, however, to be expected that the legal requirements will remain in place for some time and that the number of guests for the preview on Friday, November 6th will have to be strictly limited. We strongly recommend that our clients take the opportunity to make appointments for previewing the objects that are of interest to them at the offices of Dr. Crott Auctioneers in the weeks leading up to the event.
